Kuansan Town Restaurant

Chengdu, China

Kuansan Town Restaurant sits in a quiet natural setting in Chengdu, near the Taoist Qingyang Palace. MUDA Architects drew on the Taoist idea of the valley, expressed through water, to shape a composed, Chinese-inspired building in which walls and windows frame the courtyard as visitors move through it.

The lighting supports this measured character. Recessed downlights and uplights provide the illumination while keeping direct light sources out of sight. Developing mounting details that work with the traditional timber structure was the project's main challenge, and one of its most rewarding parts.

Light stays low and calm, letting the framed views and the sequence of spaces lead the experience.
